A static exciter is designed to supply a synchronous motor or synchronous generator with the required excitation power and, by controlling the excitation current, control other variables, e.g. the motor speed or the generator terminal voltage

The exciter consists of the following main components:
- Exciter transformer
- Exciter converter
- Common and closed-loop control equipment
- Overvoltage protective equipment and rotor starting and protective resistors

The components are preassembled in cubicle-type enclosures. The number of enclosures depends on the power rating and the desired design (e.g. redundant rectifiers).
